Teaching Philosophy
Until technical mastery is achieved, every lesson has a balance of technical studies and repertoire. General musical concepts about repertoire are introduced from the beginning of study, then the first goal is finding ease in the technical execution of the work. This clears the way for the enjoyment of self-expression and creative work.
Through teacher demonstration and analysis, students can develop their own meaning for every note in their pieces. Included musical elements are ensemble, structure, harmony, responsiveness, sound, and timing. Music is making art through time, and it is important to actively participate in your sound at all times. To become a well-rounded musician, it is also important to study music and stylistic features from different historical eras.
Lessons also include instruction on how to manage their practice time and about different practice mindsets which lead to successful performance. Sports or games are helpful analogies to reference a playful and positive attitude towards building new technical skills. As students prepare for performance, it is important to shift their focus from critical work to connection and inspiration. All students can develop these communicative qualities in their performance.
The mark of an excellent teacher is to teach students how to teach themselves. This includes basics, like developing a good sense of rhythm, pitch, tone and style. It extends to the ability to make informed phrasing choices and to express an authentic musical point of view.
Teachers who focus on larger concepts in addition to a particular piece have a more lasting impact. The skills we develop, the modes of learning, the importance of self-reflection, and the search for connection all transcend the studio into daily life.

Playing music with others in small instrumental groups is intensely rewarding. Weekly faculty coached sessions along with weekly small instrumental group rehearsals culminate in a final performance. Students will be active participants in the collaborative process, gaining a greater knowledge of ensemble techniques and widening their musical perspective. Students will learn how to apply their knowledge of music history and theory to their musical performance decisions. By learning how to work and play together, students improve their interpersonal skills.

An important question for potential students: “why are you interested in violin?” This reveals genuine interest, curiosity, and love for music and the instrument. This is so important for one’s musical journey to be rewarding to both teacher and student.
Dedicated support at home is also imperative to the success of young children starting an instrument. Recording your lessons is strongly encouraged.
